Wolves dealt transfer blow as club withdraw from race to sign 31-year-old

Wolves are preparing for a significant January transfer window.

Vitor Pereira’s arrival after Gary O’Neil’s dismissal has revitalised the Old Gold.

Although relegation remains a possibility, an improvement in results has given fans reason to be positive about the second half of the season.

With seven points from a possible nine in their last three games, including a 2-2 draw against Spurs, Pereira’s side enters Monday’s encounter against Nottingham Forest as one of the country’s most in-form teams.

And, with the mid-season transfer window now open and clubs wanting to add to their rosters, Wolves have deprived Tottenham more than just points.

Sam Johnstone tipped for early Molineux exit

After injuring his ankle against Manchester City in November, custodian Guglielmo Vicario has been sidelined for a lengthy stretch. Although Ange Postecoglou initially ruled out hiring a replacement, Sam Johnstone surfaced as an option for Spurs.

According to The Telegraph, the 31-year-old shot-stopper, who was signed by O’Neil less than six months ago, is a candidate to quit Molineux after struggling to take over the number shirt from José Sa.

There was optimism that the seasoned keeper would give Sa with competition between the sticks, but that has not occurred.Pereira praised Sa’s performance, while Johnstone has only made seven league starts this season, the last being nearly a month ago, disappointing fans.

As a result, despite having three and a half years left on his contract, the former Crystal Palace player could depart the Midlands in pursuit of more minutes.

Spurs reject January approach for Johnstone.

Despite considering bringing in a new keeper to help Fraser Forster in Vicario’s absence, Spurs have decided not to pursue the struggling Johnstone, according to Alasdair Gold.

Although Spurs chairman Daniel Levy rates the Wolves custodian highly, he will not authorise a move and will most likely look elsewhere to bolster Postecoglou’s defensive options.

With Johnstone’s future still unknown, Wolves fans will be praying that the uncertainty does not spread discontent throughout the dressing room, especially now that the team’s form has improved.

Pereira has backup alternatives in Daniel Bentley and Tom King in case the Preston-born goalie leaves this month.
