Alex Ovechkin scored for the Washington Capitals, in a close and thrilling game against the Minnesota Wild.
On the second day of 2025, the Washington Capitals and Minnesota Wild played a heated game, with the Wild winning 4-3 in a shootout.
Tom Wilson scored his 15th goal of the season, set up by Rasmus Sandin’s 12th goal at 10:19 in the first period. Ryan Hartman at even strength and Yakov Trenin on the shorthander would respond for the Wild, who went into the first interval up 2-1. Washington outshot Minnesota 13 to 11.
At 15:08 in the second period, Alex Ovechkin scored his 18th goal of the season on a power play, while Dylan Strome assisted with his 30th. Ovi now has 871 goals in his career, with only 23 to go until he ties Wayne Gretzky.
Shots were even at seven in the second quarter, with the score tied at two apiece. Martin Fehervary scored his first goal of the season at 5:34, with Pierre-Luc Dubois providing an assist for his 24th.
Marco Rossi would tie it at 11:19. The Wild outshot the Capitals 14-10 in the third period, and both teams took shots in overtime, with the Wild leading 33-31 overall. Nobody scored in overtime, thus the game went to a shootout.
In the shootout round, Dylan Strome, Pierre-Luc Dubois, and Alex Ovechkin were all stopped Mats Zuccarello was again stopped by Charlie Lindgren for the Wild, but Matt Boldy scored to help the Wild win and secure two points. The Caps get one out of two.
