Southampton make January transfer plea over Chelsea loanee Lesley Ugochukwu’s future

Southampton make January transfer plea over Chelsea loanee Lesley Ugochukwu’s futureAfter the January transfer window ends, Southampton will find out Chelsea’s decision regarding whether Lesley Ugochukwu will stay on loan at the team.

Since temporarily moving to the south coast for the summer, the 20-year-old has only made 12 appearances for the recently promoted team across all competitions.

Ugochukwu was in and out of the team under Russell Martin and missed Martin’s final four games as manager before being fired on December 15 following their 5-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Given the uncertainty surrounding his future at St. Mary’s, it appeared more likely that he would return to Stamford Bridge in January and give Chelsea the power to decide his course of action for the rest of the campaign.

Since Ivan Juric was hired last month, Southampton’s circumstances have changed, and Ugochukwu has appeared in their last three league games against Fulham, West Ham, and Crystal Palace.

Chelsea will have to decide whether to recall the Frenchman now that the winter window is open.

Southampton has been very clear about their position. In an effort to help the team avoid relegation back to the Championship, Juric wants to keep Ugochukwu with them for the remainder of the season.

“I want him to stay here,” Juric told reporters ahead of their Premier League showdown against Brentford this weekend.

“He has a lot of promise. Chelsea folks are not a bunch of idiots. He is only twenty years old, and working with young people isn’t always simple. I believe he has a lot of promise.
