Sheffield Wednesday duo recognised by EFL – attacker named ‘Championship Player of the Week’

The English Football League acknowledged Sheffield Wednesday’s Svante Ingelsson and Djeidi Gassama for their
performances against Derby County.

The efforts of Gassama and Ingelsson, who were brought back into the starting line-up by manager Danny Röhl,

were a major factor in the Owls’ 4-2 success on New Year’s Day as they stuck four past Derby to earn all three points.

Ingelsson finished the full ninety minutes at Hillsborough for the first time in the Championship since the second

game of the season against Sunderland, and Gassama scored the third goal as the home team got 2025 off to the

greatest possible start.

Both were included in the Championship Team of the Week as a result, but the Mauritanian received the most

recognition as the league named him the Championship Player of the Week, surpassing players like Josh Murphy,

Freddie Potts, and Josh Maja, who all played a significant role in their teams’ victories this week.

The EFL website described Wednesday’s number 41 as ‘amazing’, stating: ‘Djeidi Gassama of Sheffield Wednesday is

the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Week after an outstanding performance in the Owls’ 4-2 victory over Derby

at home. He has a WhoScored.com rating of 8.64. The Frenchman put on a strong all-around performance, making

two crucial passes, a tackle, an interception, and four successful dribbles in addition to scoring his third league goal

of the year.

The Owls pair will be hoping to make an impact against the Lions, just as they did against the Rams a few days ago,

when Wednesday returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they visit MIllwall at S6.
