Norwich City: Johannes Hoff Thorup on Ashley Barnes future

Barnes has had to adjust to a squad position for the Canaries since Thorup took over in May. He only started once this season after recovering from a long-term Achilles injury.

That has fueled conjecture about his future, with promotion-chasing Sheffield United connected and the 35-year-old’s contract expiring in the summer.

Thorup believes that an exit would be best for all parties involved, but he still believes the former Burnley striker has a role to play under him.

“We have to sit down and find the best solution for everyone,” he told me. “It’s him, plus a few more.Sometimes you have to give a bit to get something, and sometimes you have to accept things.

“I understand that if he can get a two-year contract elsewhere, it’s probably fine, even though I’d like him to stay.” I admire his mentality and experience.

“It’s similar to the Fasi (Christian Fassnacht) case.” We must be respectful and accept positive opportunities for him, yet he can still be utilized.

Barnes made an impact as a substitute in City’s tense 1-0 victory over Luton, demonstrating the skills that his head coach praised. The Dane was satisfied with his performance at Kenilworth Road in a game that suited his team.

Thorup told BBC Radio Norfolk, “He is a great option as long as he accepts that.” “These are the closing moments of his career; he may have one or two more seasons, but it is still the end.

“So he can contribute in a variety of ways: he can be a leader for the younger players, and he can come on in the final 20-25 minutes and demonstrate his abilities in terms of ball control, duels, and fouls. With a little more luck, he could have scored another goal for us.

“I’m pleased with what he gave the team, because it was exactly what we needed at that time.”
