The big selection decisions facing Critchley for Hearts v Motherwell

Heart of Midlothian seeks a win at Tynecastle Park after a disappointing 2-2 draw with Ross County on Sunday, despite leading 2-0 in the closing two minutes.

It was a terrible and disastrous finale to an encouraging 95-minute performance. Hearts were the superior team in Dingwall and could have had a bigger lead if referee Ross Hardie had awarded a penalty for a foul on James Penrice, as the Scottish FA’s VAR panel argued.

This afternoon, Motherwell will visit Tynecastle Park. Prior to the game, some fans will organize a demonstration on the Foundation Plaza to express their feelings towards the club board and principal shareholder, Foundation of Hearts.

On the pitch, it will be intriguing to watch whatever starting XI Neil Critchley chooses.

Lawrence Shankland could return following a calf issue which saw him sitout the County match while Cammy Devlin is back from suspension and new signing Elton Kabangu may be available. However, going on the performance in the Highlands, there is good reason for running it back and playing the same XI once more. The defensive quartet of Adam Forrester, Daniel Oyegoke, Kye Rowles and James Penrice kept County at arm’s length. Jorge Grant provided a strong foil alongside Beni Baningime while Liam Boyce and James Wilson combined well throughout the match, including for the opening goal.

One big decision will be the goalkeeping position. Craig Gordon made a costly error for the second goal and with Zander Clark waiting in the wings, Critchley could make a change between the sticks. Clark, after all, was replaced following a poor performance against Dundee earlier in the season. Equally, it perhaps would be a surprise if Critchley was to make the change. With three games in a week, there may be a reason for Devlin to return in place of Baningime. In the final third, if Shankland is fit the head coach will face a huge decision around his captain and Boyce. But going on that one game, the Northern Irishman doesn’t deserve to be dropped.
