Josh Windass talks through Sheffield Wednesday wonder goal – names a better one

Even though his goal for Sheffield Wednesday went viral this week, attacker Josh Windass still doesn’t consider it his finest.

In Wednesday’s first game of 2025, they defeated Derby County 4-2 at Hillsborough thanks to a goal from Windass. Barry Bannan, Djeidi Gassama, and Anthony Musaba scored the other three goals.

The 30-year-old has scored several fine goals for Owls over the years, and he doesn’t even consider his long-range shot against Derby to be his best goal for the club.

“I thought last year’s Blackburn one was better than that,” he stated on Wednesday when speaking to The Star. It was a good goal, but… It was chilly, I didn’t want to risk tearing my hamstrings, and I knew I was faster than Craig Forsyth, so I opted to hit it as soon as I saw him leave his line. I had planned to kick it past him since he was the final man and I knew I could score. Therefore, I chose to just hit it.

“It went in nice and perfect after I hit it, even though I first thought it was going wide. I believe the wind brought it back in.”

Meanwhile, speaking to Radio Sheffield, he continued, “I just had to have good technique and produce it… Obviously I’ve been striking balls since I was three years old, so that’s it – technique, technique, technique.”

Wednesday are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they play host to Millwall at S6, and Windass will be eager to make it six goals in six games against the Lions as he continues his journey towards becoming the club’s best scorer this century.
