Hull City boss Ruben Selles admitted his side ‘suffered’ against Middlesbrough as they struggled to get to grips with Michael Carrick’s side – which made the late heartbreak all the harder to deal with.
Though Selles admitted honestly that his side were outplayed for much of the game by Boro, it looked like his side had done enough to claim what would have been a big point for them thanks to a solid defensive effort. That was until Alex Gilbert stepped up from the bench to fire home a late Boro winner after a great run from fellow sub Delano Burgzorg.
With Boro missing nine important players for the game, Selles refused to blame Hull’s own injury issues on the result and instead took the defeat on his own shoulders as he praised Boro’s game plan and strength in depth.
Selles said: “It’s difficult. That is for me to find a way to be successful in these circumstances. We need to be responsible. They had two or three powerful substitutions. I need to find a way to beat that gameplan. The point would have been good for us. We showed character, togetherness and defended the situations. Our goalkeeper was there when we needed him. It’s difficult to take.
“We didn’t find ourselves in the game and our opponent was better in parts of the game. We managed to make a tremendous defensive effort. We were not able to break their pressure in the way we wanted and against the ball we didn’t find our triggers.
“We ended up suffering, but then in that suffer the team responded well and defended well. When they made substitutions they speeded up the game and we managed to stay strong. That final minute is the most difficult thing to take.”
On the Boro goal, and particularly the ease with which Burgzorg was able to drive to the byline, Selles added: “We should have dealt with the situation better. We should have known we hadn’t been able to apply those triggers and win the ball high in the pitch. We needed to cut the run and the pass earlier. We need to be better in those situations. If we can’t win it, at least don’t lose it.”
