Liverpool may consider testing Ben Doak, who has been doing well on loan at Middlesbrough, in the second half of the season.
Doak, who joined Middlesbrough on loan from Liverpool in August, has contributed two goals and five assists in 19 appearances under Michael Carrick’s management.
According to FBref, the Scotland international ranks among the top 1% of European wingers in terms of progressive carries, passes received, and touches in the opponent’s area.
According to Lewis Steele of the Mail, his performances are garnering interest from clubs above the Championship level.
According to the writer, “a couple of higher-ranked clubs are keeping an eye on his situation with a desire to get him out of Liverpool.”
As of now, “nothing concrete has happened on that front,” although there is speculation that movement could occur in January, particularly given the ability to end Doak’s loan mid-season.
It is unknown whether the interest is for another loan or a permanent contract, but the hope is that Liverpool intends to keep the 19-year-old long term.
Over the summer, it was believed that the club were open to offers for Doak, with Leicester being one among the contenders for the youngster bought from Celtic.
A switch to Leicester?
If Liverpool transfers Doak from Middlesbrough for the second half of the season, Leicester could be a potential option.
Their interest in the summer was questioned considering that they had recently signed Abdul Fatawu Issahaku from Sporting CP on a permanent basis, but the Ghanaian sustained a season-ending ACL injury in November.
Leicester has depended on Jordan Ayew, Kasey McAteer, and Facundo Buonanotte on their right side since then, although none have been very effective.
In a December interview with Sky Sports, Middlesbrough manager Carrick expressed his “quite calm” response to the issue surrounding his star loanee.
“There are loads of things, ifs and buts and changes in football – that’s transfer windows. I’ve mentioned it to you enough times, but I’m fairly calm about it to be honest.
“I am pleased with how things are progressing, and we will deal with whatever happens next.
“Ben is happy, and we are happy because he is in a nice environment. His body language and demeanour indicate that he is cheerful.
“He continues to work hard and enjoys his time here, and it has been helpful for us. As long as that continues, we’re all set.”
