Fatal Tunstall house fire started by ‘accident. A woman was confirmed dead at the scene

A fatal house fire in Stoke-on-Trent was started accidentally, an investigation has revealed. A woman in her 80s was pronounced dead at the scene of the blaze at the junction of Botesworth Gardens and Pennyfields Avenue, in Tunstall.

Police, firefighters and paramedics had been sent to the scene at 8.36pm on December 17. A cordon was set up for several hours as a probe into what sparked the inferno got underway.

In an update released on Christmas Eve, a Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We can confirm that the cause of a fatal fire in Stoke-on-Trent was accidental. Firefighters were sent to Botesworth Gardens in Tunstall at just after 8.30pm on Tuesday, December 17.

 

“They extinguished the fire and found a woman in her 80s inside. Sadly, she died at the scene. We have been working alongside our colleagues at Staffordshire Police to determine how the fire started, and can now confirm that it was accidental.

 

“We’d like to extend our sincere condolences to the woman’s family at this deeply traumatic time.”

 

An ambulance service spokesman said: “We were called by the fire service to reports of a property fire. An ambulance and a paramedic officer responded to the scene within seven minutes of the 999 call being made. Sadly, nothing could be done to save a woman from the property and she was confirmed dead at the scene by paramedics.”
