“Staggering” – Dejphon Chansiri faces fierce Sheffield Wednesday criticism after Danny Rohl transfer claim

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri has been told to resolve any issues with boss Danny Rohl quickly after the German admitted he didn’t know how the January window will play out.

Rohl performed a miracle by keeping the Owls in the Championship against all odds last season, despite inheriting a team in relegation trouble.

Wednesday have made progress in Rohl’s first full season in charge, with the team currently sitting 11th in the table, just four points from the playoffs.

As a result, Rohl and the fans were expecting for a productive January window to assist the team kick-start, but the manager informed the Sheffield Star that he has been unable to speak with Chansiri despite the window opening at the beginning of January.

Naturally, this sparked alarm among Wednesday fans, and fan analyst Patrick couldn’t disguise his irritation with Chansiri, explaining how important it is that the owner immediately bring Rohl back on board.

“Unfortunately, my immediate thought was that I am not surprised. It’s Groundhog Day all over again for Chansiri.

Championship Table (as of 31/12/24)
Team P GD Pts
6 Middlesbrough 24 10 37
7 Watford 23 2 37
8 West Brom 24 9 36
9 Swansea City 24 4 33
10 Bristol City 24 2 33
11 Sheffield Wednesday 24 -4 33

“Even if you take it away from football, it’s a complete lack of etiquette and respect to treat his manager this way, to not communicate with him, to not listen to his worries, or to the areas that Rohl believes the team should improve.

“Chansiri has the arrogance to believe that he does not need to give Rohl his time because he thinks he knows best. It’s truly astounding that if your boss does not treat you with respect, if they refuse to communicate with you and listen to your ideas, you may consider leaving. It merely indicates that Chansiri isn’t paying attention, and is he aware that Rohl was of interest to Southampton?

“Rohl is the only thing trying to propel us ahead as a club, and he is a very professional manager who believes in precise planning and the right attitude. Not the spontaneous method that Chansiri prefers.

“Rohl cut a frustrated figure last January, and it’s no secret that he knows he needs more signings to move this project forward. It’s not even that he needs millions and millions; it’s just that there is no communication, which impedes any plans he might have, which must be extremely frustrating.

“There’s only so much patience Rohl will have, and if clubs do come for him, he will go. You can’t test someone’s patience forever. Chansiri, by his stupidity, his lack of manners, and lack of knowledge of how to operate a club, means the best thing to happen to this club in years could slip through his fingers, and it doesn’t bear thinking about what would happen if we lost Rohl through stunning incompetence.

“It would set the club back, and it’s very concerning, but with Chansiri in charge, there’s always that level of uncertainty, that you can wake up to some bad news and this is it today! It’s extremely, very concerning.”

Danny Rohl needs backing at Sheffield Wednesday

This is a very concerning development for Wednesday, and as previously stated, Rohl was associated with the Southampton post only a few weeks ago, so clubs will be keeping an eye on the situation.

If the manager was demanding signing after signing, you could sympathize with Chansiri, but as far as we can tell, the owner isn’t even doing the fundamentals, such as communicating with the head coach about how the window would look.
To be in that scenario at the end of December is inexcusable, and it is just the latest in a long line of perplexing decisions made by Chansiri.

Everyone involved with the club will be hoping that Rohl’s public statement will jolt the owner into action, but history shows that this may not happen.

Finally, Wednesday has made significant progress under Rohl, and Chansiri should be doing everything he can to help him, so it will be intriguing to see how the window unfolds.
