Ipswich could repeat Szmodics masterclass by signing “special” EFL star this month.
Ipswich Town’s 2024 season ended with a thrilling 2-0 win over Chelsea, with Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson scoring both goals.
Ipswich, currently in 17th place, is only one point behind Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are directly above them. The Tractor Boys hope to improve their results in the New Year and move out of the bottom three Premier League slots.
In January, the transfer window reopens, and Kieran McKenna hopes to improve his team’s prospects of avoiding relegation by making some reinforcements.
While the attacking firepower at his disposal hasn’t been a major concern, the Northern Irishman wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to sign an electrifying forward.
Ipswich face up for “special” EFL standout.
According to sources from Spain, Ipswich will compete with Southampton and AFC Bournemouth for £10 million-rated Josh Maja, who has excelled in the Championship with West Bromwich Albion.
This has sparked the curiosity of numerous Premier League sides, including the Tractor Boys. McKenna’s men already boast the potency of Delap up top, who is already up to seven top-flight goals for the term after bagging the opener versus Chelsea.
Relegation prospects cannot rely solely on Delap, since backup possibilities include George Hirst, who is prone to injuries, and Ali Al-Hamadi, who may leave on loan soon.
Ipswich might benefit from signing the “special” striker, as ex-boss Carlos Corberan once described him, for a reputed sum of £10 million. McKenna hopes for a similar deal to Sammie Szmodics’.
What Maja can give Ipswich
It is unlikely that Maja would make an immediate impact in the first squad at Portman Road, given Delap’s excellent leadership of the top-flight minnows.
However, having Maja’s experience in front of goal would be beneficial, as the former Sunderland player has ten goals and two assists in league action for his promotion-chasing club this season.
