Premier League release statement as Chelsea fans rage at penalty decision against Ipswich.
Chelsea fans were outraged after Ipswich Town were granted a penalty early in the Blues’ defeat at Portman Road. Blues goalie Filip Jorgensen was found to have fouled Liam Delap in the area, and referee John Brooks directed to the spot. Replays revealed that Jorgensen made very little contact, but after a VAR review, the verdict remained. Delap took the penalty and scored to make it 1-0 for Ipswich at Portman Road, causing outrage among Chelsea fans on social media.
“How on Earth is that a punishment? “That is a massive dive from Delap,” said one on X. “That’s never a penalty,” added a third. A fourth person asked, “How did the VAR confirm that as a penalty when there was no contact at all?” Laughable.” Shortly after, the Premier League Match Centre explained why the penalty was allowed to stand. Advertisement “The referee’s call of penalty for a foul by Jörgensen on Delap was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed there was sufficient contact for a penalty,” according to the statement.
Chelsea thought they equalised midway through the first half but Joao Felix’s goal was disallowed for offside after a lengthy check.
Ipswich held onto their 1-0 lead as they went into half-time before scoring another in the second half.
“Then after when we concede the second goal probably the second goal killed the game a little bit.”
He went on to say, “I’m worried for sure because when we lose a game, I’m always concerned, even when we win. “But we anticipated this type of situation since it is part of the season, part of the time. So I’m not shocked, and we’ll definitely be back soon.
