Phil Parkinson issues Paul Mullin verdict amid big update on Wrexham ace before Barnsley - The Wrexham Insider

Wrexham will try to start 2025 in style when they meet Barnsley on January 1st.

2024 was a year of celebration for Wrexham. They were promoted to League One and are now well in contention for a position in the Championship next season.

The Red Dragons most recently beat Wigan Athletic 2-1, moving them over Wycombe Wanderers and one point behind Birmingham City.

Both teams still have one game advantage over Phil Parkinson’s team, who need a win on New Year’s Day to maintain their automatic promotion push.

Wrexham will face Barnsley in their first 2025 match at Oakwell on Wednesday at 3pm.

Parkinson shared an excellent report on another Wrexham player, Paul Mullin, before to the next match.

Mullin scored for Wrexham against Blackpool on Boxing Day, marking his first goal in 11 league meetings.

However, the 30-year-old went blank again while starting against Wigan on Saturday afternoon, prompting substitute Steven Fletcher to salvage the three points off the bench.

According to Leader Live, Parkinson issued a good verdict for Mullin and provided an update on Jack Marriott’s injury recovery.

He said: “We’ve got Arthur Okonkwo ready to start training harder in the next week or so, Jack Marriott is back on the pitch, Paul Mullin is working hard for us, scored a wonderful goal the other day, and looked threatening against Wigan.

“We’re pleased but we’re going to keep our feet firmly on the ground and make sure the preparation is as professional as it can be each and every game.”

Jack Marriott might succeed Paul Mullin at Wrexham.

Mullin may have scored against Blackpool and received plaudits for his Wigan performance, but he is still not scoring enough goals to win a regular starting spot.

The Liverpool-born forward has only two league goals this season and may be pushed out of the starting lineup when Marriott returns soon.

Despite being out injured since October, Marriott is Wrexham’s top-scoring number nine in League One this season, with five goals.

The Red Dragons are currently in a very tight promotion race, and unless Mullin begins performing in the next weeks, he should be discarded in favor of Marriott.
