Liam Delap breaks silence on Ipswich Town transfer talk amid Chelsea ‘interest’
Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap has replied to allegations connecting him away from the club, with Chelsea among the Premier League sides said to be interested in the 21-year-old.
Delap scored on Monday night as Ipswich won 2-0 against the London club. The striker converted a penalty in the first half, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead. Former Blue Omari Hutchinson added a second goal in the second half.
Chelsea’s striker alternatives, including Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku, have led to speculation about potential replacements. Delap, who joined Ipswich from Manchester City’s academy this summer, is expected to become a main striker for England in the near future.
Despite concerns about his future, Delap claims he does not believe his future lies away from Portman Road. After the win over Chelsea, he told Suffolk News, “I don’t really look at things like that.” So, sure, I’m solely focused on Ipswich.
“We [and Hutchinson] are fortunate to be playing in the Premier League. I think we have a tremendous opportunity here at Ipswich, and we’re simply trying to show our abilities week in and week out, which is a big bonus for me.”
Delap has seven goals and two assists in the Premier League this season, which is a respectable output for a player representing a team in relegation battle. Though a January trade is improbable, if Chelsea’s desire is genuine, it would not be surprising if they tested the waters this summer. Especially if Ipswich are relegated to the Championship.
Enzo Maresca’s primary goal is to restore Chelsea’s winning streak following three consecutive losses in the league. They were held to a draw against Everton before Christmas, followed by consecutive defeats against Fulham and Ipswich.
