Jack Butland exit: Rangers to seal January transfer after what star has done.
Philippe Clement will be able to see precisely how thin the Rangers’ ice is when he skates around Ibrox.
The Belgian has been under intense strain for months, only recently relieved by a run of good form in all competitions, but supporters have already removed the blinkers. Following a disputed loss to Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Cup final, the Gers edged out a mediocre Dundee team at Ibrox due to a solitary strike from Vaclav Cerny. The performances that followed were nothing short of disastrous. Firstly, they lost 2-1 to St Mirren before relying on a sensational second-half performance from Hamza Igamane to salvage a point against Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday, December 29.
Something that both of those games had in common – Jack Butland’s massively concerning drop in form between the sticks.
He gave away an idiotic penalty in the 2-1 loss at the SMISA Stadium, only to double down on that with a performance that should have seen all three points thrown away against the Steelmen.
Rangers to seek Jack Butland transfer in January
Of course, the entire squad has struggled to perform under Clement’s supervision. However, Butland’s decline in form has been considerably more visible and, in some ways, more alarming. Last season, he was one of the Scottish Premiership’s best players, and his form carried over to the Europa League, eliciting interest in a return to the Premier League. Ipswich Town’s interest in the shot-stopper was contested [Ben Jacobs], but many believed the Light Blues should let him go if a £10 million bid came in.
With the custodian currently making far too many blunders that cost goals and penalties, Clement may be asking why the club did not push for his departure last summer. Liam Kelly remains on the bench, but with only one game for the Gers since coming to Ibrox in June, it’s possible that another custodian is required before Butland finds a new home.
