Injury problems persist: Sheffield United team news and predicted XI to face Sunderland

As they start 2025, Sheffield United is sacrificing their top spot in the Championship in order to get back on track against Sunderland.
Sheffield United lost points during the Christmas break, which caused them to drop out of the top spot in the Championship table.

Last time out, the Blades were unable to rally against managerless West Brom, drawing 1-1 with the Baggies at Bramall Lane after being defeated by Burnley on home turf to snap their winning streak.

Nevertheless, Chris Wilder and company have had a season to be proud of. Despite their slight slip-up in performance, they are in a solid second place and are anticipating an eventful 2025 following a long-awaited takeover.

Sheffield United will play a Sunderland team that is also vying for promotion. After a great start, the Black Cats are now in fourth place but have lost a significant amount of ground to the top two.

Sheffield United team news

Given that important players continue to sustain injuries before the Sunderland match, Wilder isn’t exactly spoilt for choice.

In order to cover for several absences against West Brom, Sheffield United put a number of young players on their bench, and it appears that they will do the same for the trip to the Stadium of Light.

Before the match, Blades manager Wilder stated that Vini Souza, Tyrese Campbell, and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi would not be playing. Additionally, Femi Seriki has been battling a calf problem.

After breaking his achilles on Boxing Day, Harry Souttar has joined Ollie Arblaster in having his season curtailed by injury.

Predicted XI

(4-2-3-1)

Cooper; Gilchrist, Ahmedhodzic, Robinson, Burrows; Peck, Davies; Brooks, O’Hare, Hamer; Moore.

There doesn’t seem to be much room for opportunity against Sunderland because Sheffield United is missing several first-team players and starting XI mainstays, and Wilder appears cautious to start rarely seen academy possibilities at the deep end.

Sydie Peck and Tom Davies will play in midfield, while Jack Robinson and Anel Ahmedhodzic will remain at centre back.

Andre Brooks is expected to stay in that position after starting and scoring from the wing against West Brom.

As previously mentioned, the bench will include a number of academy talents in addition to players like Sam McCallum, Rhys Norrington-Davies, and Rhian Brewster.
