In-form Sheffield Wednesday attacker pleased with goal tally but makes Preston North End admission

Sheffield Wednesday’s Josh Windass is satisfied with his goal return this season, but confessed that his strike against Presto North End doesn’t signify anything.

The Owls’ number 11 scored an excellent goal against Preston on Sunday to get Wednesday back to 1-1 at Deepdale, but unlike in recent fixtures the visitors weren’t able to complete a comeback in their final game of 2024, going on to lose 3-1 thanks to a brace from Emil Riis and penalty from Sam Greenwood.

It was certainly a bittersweet day for Windass as he notched his 100th career goal during the game in Lancashire, and he’s also now just one away from becoming only the third Owl this side of the millennium to reach a half-century in Wednesday colours.

Even though it’s still December, his ninth goal of the season has already tied his best Championship total, and he believes it’s satisfying to have played so much so far.

Over the weekend, he told the media, “I’m just trying to do my best for the team.” “I don’t particularly enjoy scoring goals when we lose… Thus, I’m not overly concerned today. Playing all the games has been enjoyable, and I consistently have strong numbers.

“If we want to be taken seriously, we need to win both of our big home games right now. Although we are in a strong position, we must move forward and begin accumulating victories on the bounce.”

Meanwhile, on the milestone itself, Windass said, “I knew I was close, but I didn’t know I’d done it,” before joking, “Not bad for someone who only got a contract because of his old man!

But no, it’s a nice achievement to score that many goal from my position isn’t that easy to do… I don’t know if I’ll get another 100, but I’ll give it a try! I’m really proud, it’s not easy to score goals especially with the pressure and scrutiny you deal with, and it’s nice to get these milestones, but I am disappointed it was in a defeat.

Sheffield Wednesday

Over his career at Hillsborough, Windass has scored 49 goals for the Owls, 27 of which have come in Championship games. During Wednesday’s tenure there, he scored 15 goals in League One, with the remaining seven coming in cup competitions.

Accrington Stanley

When you include his goal in the 2016 playoffs, the attacker’s second-most successful goal-scoring tenure was with Accrington in League Two, where he scored 21 league goals in 75 games. In the FA Cup, he scored another goal for the team.

Rangers

With 32 goals and assists in 73 games for the Gers, including 19 goals in the Premiership, Scottish FA Cup, and Scottish League Cup, his stint in Scotland was comparatively remarkable. Windass played there primarily as a left winger or attacking midfielder.

Wigan Athletic

Although Windass does not have many positive memories of his time at Wigan, he did manage to score a few goals for the team, tallying nine goals in 54 games, all of which took place in the English football second division. In January 2020, he left for the Owls on loan before becoming a permanent member later that year.
