“Felt very strange” – Player on summer move to Rangers, reveals he ‘had no plans’ to leave club.
Rangers boss Philippe Clement has made extensive use of Robin Pröpper, who joined at Ibrox from FC Twente in the summer.
This season, the defender has played 1,660 minutes in 21 games in all competitions for the Rangers.
Tubantia spoke with the 31-year-old and discussed his summer transfer to Rangers.
The centre-back played three years with the Dutch club before joining Philippe Clement’s squad. Twente advanced to this season’s Europa League after being ousted in the Champions League qualifications.
Pröpper had the option of leaving the Eredivisie in the summer of 2023, but his departure was prohibited. He subsequently secured a release clause, which Rangers used to gain his services.
The Rangers’ summer acquisition has now revealed that he did not intend to leave the Dutch club.
“It just demonstrates that you cannot plan anything in your profession. “I didn’t plan to leave, so it felt strange,” he added.
“I had a terrific experience at Twente, and we had a really good bunch of people who were all really ambitious. I wanted to travel to Europe with Twente. “And then I went crazy.”
According to Twente technical director Arnold Bruggink, Rangers signed the defender using his release clause. The buyout clause gave the Dutchman complete control over his future with the Eredivisie team.
“Ideally, I would have like to divide myself in two. One part Twente, the other Rangers. “But I had to make a choice,” Röpper stated.
“And, as much as I appreciated it, this was an opportunity to go on another amazing journey overseas. I was released from Vitesse ten years ago, and now I have the opportunity to join Rangers.”
“There were various possibilities to leave the year before, but Twente did not want to lose me at that time. Twente was also correct about this. I then explained that if I were to sign, a certain condition must be put in my contract. That made me feel like I still had control over my work and wasn’t utterly stuck.”
