Chelsea player ratings vs Ipswich: Cole Palmer needs help! England star can’t save Blues from shock defeat after defensive blunders

Chelsea failed to recover from their recent defeat at Fulham, losing back-to-back Premier League games for the first time under Enzo Maresca. It was an end-to-end start, with Ipswich hungry for points and eager to impress. Liam Delap, in particular, started like an express train for the hosts, drawing a 12th-minute penalty from Blues keeper Filip Jorgensen and converting it himself. Chelsea then regained control of the game, with Joao Felix’s would-be equaliser in the first half ruled out for offside following a lengthy VAR review, as well as additional chances. But Ipswich’s second soon after half-time was another gift, with Axel Disasi losing control, Delap driving at goal, and ex-Blues star Omari Hutchinson finishing well.
Cole Palmer twice hit the woodwork and impressed on an otherwise challenging evening. But, with Ed Sheeran watching on in the stands, Chelsea are the first visiting team to lose a Premier League game at Ipswich since April 2002.

Goalkeeper & Defence

Filip Jorgensen (5/10): Chelsea fans have been waiting for the young Dane to receive his moment, but handing away the early penalty was not a good start, even if it was soft. Only minutes later, Delap scored a beautiful second, and despite additional saves, Hutchinson was unable to be stopped. Axel Disasi (4/10): He realised as soon as Hutchinson increased Ipswich’s lead that it was his fault. The hosts still had a lot to accomplish, but handing the ball away in his own half was atrocious. Tosin (4/10): Appeared hesitant to engage Delap for fear of being beaten for speed or strength, which was a factor in the second Ipswich goal when the striker was running at him and he backed off. Seemed nervous when being pressed too.

Levi Colwill (5/10): Clattered by Delap in the early moments, he knew he was in for a brutal fight. Mark Cucurella (6/10): Given that Ipswich were so clinical with their openings, a great chance late in the first half that he pulled wide looks like a bigger miss in hindsight than it might have done in the moment.
