Following the 2-2 draw between Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion, Unai Emery and Fabian Hurzeler expressed divergent views.
Following a thrilling four-goal battle at Villa Park on Monday night, Emery and Hurzeler both believed their clubs should have won all three points.
The tie left both Brighton and Villa several points outside of the Premier League‘s top seven at the end of 2024, which neither team was really pleased about.
Although Villa looked dangerous for the outcome of the first period, which was prolonged by 12 minutes of injury time for numerous lengthy stoppages, the Seagulls were the superior team at first and took advantage when Simon Adingra scored the first goal 13 minutes in.
Before Morgan Rogers gave Villa a 2-1 lead just after halftime by hammering into the far corner after a deft Watkins ball, Ollie Watkins’ penalty put the home team back on level terms. But as the second half progressed, Brighton got better and Tariq Lamptey eventually equalized.
Hurzeler thinks Albion deserved the win, maybe due to recency bias in light of his team’s late-game push for a winner.
During the news conference following the game, the German head coach stated, “You have to defend well at Villa Park, and I don’t really remember chances or big chances for Villa.”
“You should be happy when you return, but I believe we deserved more because we were the superior team, had more opportunities, controlled the game, and outplayed them before giving up an easy goal and losing steam a little after halftime.”
“In the end, you can give the pen but you can’t not give the foul on Bart,” Hurzeler continued, expressing frustration at the nature of Villa’s first goal, which was a penalty given for Joao Pedro’s foul on Morgan Rogers following goalie Bart Verbruggen’s block. If it keeps on this way, you’ll witness the goalie being blocked every weekend.
“The Premier League will go to another sport if they can’t come up with a clear regulation. I don’t see why it’s not a foul; they need to come up with a solution. In a typical game, when a player is blocked while the ball is not close to him, it’s always a foul.
Fabian Hurzeler is not in agreement with Unai Emery.
With a completely different outlook than Hurzeler, Emery was certain that, given the way the game went, Villa should have won all three points. The Spaniard was sad to lose in the last quarter of an hour for the eleventh time this season, but he was impressed by his team’s will to battle back and take the lead.
Emery insisted that the point was insufficient given our performance following the opening goal. Naturally, we made a huge error by starting with a slower collective rhythm and giving up the first goal, even though it was an easy one. Naturally, though, we fixed it and improved over time.
“We started off well in the second half, creating chances to score, and we scored one goal. We also started not giving up many goals.” However, they were trying to get more with their alterations after we didn’t do it. They achieved their objective, but we continued to push and provided the final opportunity.
We performed essentially in the same manner as the other home games, therefore I believe we deserved to win. But sometimes, as now, it’s insufficient. We must accept it, and we must be proud of what we accomplished as we wrap up the first half of the season.
