“They should’ve sacked him sooner.” – Southampton old boy thinks club is doomed, been run into ground

Southampton are currently at the bottom of the Premier League table, with only six points from 18 matches this season.

Ivan Jurić was just brought in with the major ask of trying to save the club from relegation to the Championship, but many believe it is an impossible assignment given the circumstances the Saints find themselves in.

Ivan Golac had two spells at Southampton.

Initially, he played for the club from 1978 to 1983 and then was briefly permanently transferred to Belasica before returning and staying until 1986.

Golac expressed his concerns about his old team in an interview with Croatian newspaper Večernji List ahead of Southampton’s match against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Golac believes Southampton have been ran into the ground, and that off-field decisions have harmed the club and contributed to the current position.

According to Večernji list, the 74-year-old claimed that, “Southampton has been poorly managed in recent years, but has always been known as one of the most stable and high-quality clubs in England.”

“I don’t see where they can get a point in the upcoming games. Southampton has finished its Premier League

assignment. This is a club that used to have a great family feel and play fantastic football. We used to be the most

influential team in the league, defeating the most formidable opponents. However, due to ineffective professional

leadership, the club has found itself in an unprecedented and dangerous scenario. And I’ve been following English

football for 50 years.”

Golac criticised the club’s recent management, stating: “It is unbelievable to me that they kept a coach who lost so

many games for so long.” Common sense would have dictated that they fire him sooner and try someone else. I’m not

familiar with Jurić, but I recognise his name. Similarly, I don’t know the owner of Southampton. I only know he’s

from Kragujevac. And now, people with a deeper understanding of football can see that Southampton is heading for

the abyss, with no way out. I, for one, don’t see how they can gain a point in the upcoming games.

“Southampton completed their Premier League mission a few months ago, and Jurić has a very difficult job.” As a

coach, your only option is to be ashamed in these instances. Nothing can be done about such a sports policy.”
