Norwich City boss confirms player facing FA investigation after alleged incident during Sunderland defeat

Following an alleged incident during Norwich City’s recent 2-1 loss to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup has confirmed that star player Borja Sainz is the subject of an FA investigation. The two teams engaged in a foul-tempered match on Wearside shortly before Christmas, with referee Leigh Doughty issuing a barrage of warnings before dismissing visiting center-back Jose Cordoba for a second bookable offence halfway through the second half.

Sainz, for his part, was involved in many heated incidents, one of which seemed to entail a confrontation with Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris after a collision on the touchline. Thorup, the manager of Norwich, has now acknowledged that the Spaniard’s antics might backfire.

“We haven’t seen what it [the FA investigation] is about, or any footage of it, so that’s what we’re waiting for – and the reason why he’s still playing,” the Dane stated in an interview with BBC Radio Norfolk following his team’s 1-1 draw with QPR on Sunday.

Thorup went on, “I will be careful saying too much,” when asked if there was a claim that he had spat at an opponent. Prior to hearing from Borja, I must witness the incident. We need to resolve this issue, which suddenly came to our knowledge.”

Sainz has now scored almost 16 goals in all competitions this season, making him a very significant presence for Norwich. But in his previous six games, he has failed to score, and on December 21, the Canaries made the lengthy journey to the North East, he failed to score.

“The red card, he can give it of course and he decided to do it,” Thorup said following his team’s loss that day. “I’d have loved some different calls in different situations but that’s probably not to discuss here because there were definitely some big ones that he missed.” “He can give it, I spoke to Jose because he needs to be more clever in a situation like that. Unfortunately for us, there are many things that we can’t control. It’s big calls not in our favor.”
