Norwich City (1) – QPR (0) – “Naturally I’m Worried. But Barry Bridges’ Goal should not have been Disallowed Early On”

Rangers then traveled to Carrow Road on October 11, 1969, following a goalless draw with Preston North End at Loftus Road four days earlier. Steve McGill’s report from “The People” the next day stated: “Another goalless game for Rangers. Another blow to promotion hopes.” Manager Les Allen acknowledged, “Naturally I’m worried. But Barry Bridges’ goal should not have been disallowed early on.” “The linesman flagged as if the ball was over the goal-line, yet the referee wouldn’t even walk over to him.” It took home center-half Duncan Forbes to show the scoring touch with a hefty header from Ken Foggo’s corner. Norwich was fortunate because the forward line was without a punch.

Although Rangers created more obvious opportunities, their shooters, including Rodney Marsh, were well off the mark. He missed two excellent opportunities due to poor shooting.

Kevin Keelan, the goalie for Norwich, had an excellent game. He received applause for his daring runs to cut-out centers and corners.

Rangers’ confidence was shaken by his brilliant play, and it was further damaged when Sibley returned from injury only to be carried off with a bruised leg muscle.

Although Ron Hunt filled in, Rangers needed more attacking flair rather than defensive strength.

Late in the game, they put up a valiant fight for the equalizer, but their efforts faltered a bit, and Venables was sent out for “showing consistent dissent” to the referee.

Rangers must now realize that returning to the First Division is far more difficult than many people believe following a sad afternoon.

This brief report was published elsewhere:

When Queen’s Park Rangers onto the field in Norwich, the crowd welcomed Barry Bridges, who was born there.

Bridges was soon on the move. Frank Clarke headed his center straight for Keelan, but he flashed away on the right.

Norwich appeared to be in danger from a Mal Lucas miskick, but they were able to scramble the ball away.

The close-range tap-in from Bridges gave Norwich a fortunate break. The ball seemed to have gone over the line, but Keelan scraped it away. However, Bournemouth referee Mr. Nippard indicated play-on. Two Rangers fans were hauled off the field after protesting.

After hitting Charlie Crickmore in the 36th minute, Frank Sibley was taken out on a stretcher. Ron Hunt entered as a stand-in.

Following a ball from Mick Leach, Marsh had a fantastic opportunity but missed the mark from ten yards out with just Kevin Keelan to beat.

The next Saturday, Rangers lost 2-3 at Carlisle.
