Due to a severe lack of playing time, Southampton manager Ivan Juric may decide to cut Ronnie Edwards from his team. Sheffield Wednesday is rumored to be interested in the center-back to help him advance.
After playing well for Peterborough United, the 21-year-old Edwards joined Southampton in the summer under Russell Martin, although he hasn’t played much for the Saints across all competitions this year. Edwards is fighting for playing time with only 12 minutes of Premier League appearances (he came on late in a 5-1 loss to Chelsea at the beginning of the month) and one League Cup start. As a result, Juric may bench the Englishman as he evaluates his progress for the upcoming campaign.
Report: Juric Could Let Russell Martin Signing Depart
The youngster simply hasn’t played enough this season
According to The Sheffield Star, the Yorkshire team is attempting to sign the defender on loan to strengthen their backline, and Southampton youngster Edwards has been on Wednesday’s radar.
Wednesday is’very keen’ to attempt to get a deal done for the outstanding young defender, who is believed to be in high demand after being made available for a loan move in January, according to the source.
Edwards joined Southampton in the summer, but due to his lack of experience, he hasn’t played much for the Saints this season. The England youth international is now expected to be loaned out in order to get consistent playing time.
Having already had fellow Saints player Shea Charles at Hillsborough this season, Owls manager Danny Rohl has made Edwards a top target in an effort to bolster his defense. This could give him leverage when negotiating with Arsenal for the Northern Ireland international, as reported earlier in the season.
