Michael Newberry, a former defender in the Newcastle United academy, died unexpectedly at the age of 27.
As a young player, Newberry advanced through Newcastle United’s academy and won the Wor Jackie award in 2016. In 2018, he left the team to join Vikingur Ólafsvík of Iceland.
Before joining Cliftonville in the summer, he won two Irish Premiership titles after moving to Northern Ireland with Linfield in 2021.
On Boxing Day, he made his 24th appearance for Cliftonville in a 2-0 loss against Crusaders. Both Linfield’s game against Larne and the club’s next game against Dungannon Swifts have been postponed.
Newberry was 27 years old when he died.
On Monday, December 30, Cliftonville issued a statement stating: “The sudden death of Michael Newberry has devastated the Cliftonville Football Club.””This evening’s scheduled fixture with Dungannon Swifts at Solitude has been postponed.” Our deepest sympathies are sent to Michael’s family, friends, and the numerous teammates he played with throughout his career, as well as to the supporters who will be devastated and saddened by this tragic news at this most trying time. After the death of the former Northern Ireland Under-21s player, who was born in Newcastle, Linfield also issued a statement.
“At this very sad time, Michael’s family and friends are in the thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club,” the club said.
