Will Swan believes Crawley Town can build on performances like the first half at Exeter City and start claiming all three points to climb up the League One table.
Swan scored a brilliant goal as Reds lead the Grecians 4-1 at half-time. But the home side hit back and eventually got an equaliser in added time to claim a point and deny Rob Elliot’s side all three points.
The tie keeps the Reds in the relegation zone in 21st position, but Swan believes they can climb the ladder.
“I think we won’t want to put too much focus on our position in the league,” he told me. “Obviously, it is significant, and we should be aware of it. But I believe the primary aim is to maintain improving on performances like today and, going forward, to ensure that when we play as well as we did in the first half, we come away with all three points.”
Swan said it’stung’ not to get three points against Exeter, especially after the first half performance. “I think if you had asked us to take a point away from Exeter, we would have definitely taken it, but on the day when we were 4-1 up, it really stings not to get the three points.
“It was definitely the best 45 minutes we’ve had. It’s simply frustrating that when they came out and put pressure on us, we weren’t able to sustain it in the second half.”
The Reds will face Charlton next, and Swan feels Crawley can repeat their 2-1 victory at The Valley in early December. He said, “We went there and scored three points. So we know we have more than enough to do it at our house. It’s a rapid turnaround, but I think that’s a positive thing because after the disappointment at Orient, we did extremely well to respond today, and I believe we’ll be able to do the same again with Charlton so quickly.”
The January Transfer window will start this week. There is already speculation that Jay Williams and Ronan Darcy will leave the club, but Swan wants to see a few new players join the group.
“I’m not too sure about the comings and goings, but I think just more than anything, just some squad depth would really help,” according to him. “I mean, you know, the bench is quite light. We have next to no players. We’re currently a bare-bones squad.
“So just having some more options to start games, come off the bench, whatever it is when people are flagging after such a busy schedule, I think it’ll be a massive help.” Swan has five goals for the Reds this season and is hoping to add to them. “I don’t want to put a number on it,” he added. “I feel like when you start focusing on it too much, it becomes a little stressful if you’re not quite there. But, more importantly, if I score every time I step on the field, it’s incredible.”
