Momentum didn’t have a favorite team on Saturday night in Norfolk Catholic’s 71-55 win over O’Neill St Mary’s in the Battle Creek Holiday Tournament.
BATTLE CREEK – In Norfolk Catholic’s 71-55 victory over O’Neill St Mary’s in the Battle Creek Holiday Tournament on Saturday night, momentum did not favor either side.
The Knights lit up the scoreboard in the first half, seemingly scoring on every possession and distributing the ball around effectively. Eight different Norfolk Catholic players scored in the first quarter, and the team led 23-10 after one.
The Knights began up where they left off, pushing out to a 28-10 lead early in the second quarter.
St Mary’s settled in and responded with a few big shots to cut the lead to 34-26 at halftime.
The Cardinals’ revival continued throughout the third quarter, with Gage Hedstrom and Logan Brabec leading the charge.
St. Mary’s not only tied the game, but grabbed the lead in the third quarter, capitalizing on a buzzer-beating three by Brabec to lead 48-43 entering the fourth.
Norfolk Catholic turned the tables on St Mary’s, drawing the game at 53 and converting several late turnovers into baskets thanks to a full court press.
The Knights outscored the Cardinals 19-2 in the final three minutes to win 71-55.
Gavin Schutt led Norfolk Catholic with 15 points, followed by Max Hammond and Braeden Burbach with 14 each and Hayden Kelley with 10.
Logan Brabec and Gage Hedstrom battled hard in the loss, scoring 22 and 21 points, respectively.
Norfolk Catholic wins their fifth straight, moving to 6-2, while O’Neill St Mary’s falls to 7-2.
