Sunderland have a growing list of players on their transfer radar, with the January window just around the corner.
Sunderland has had a promising first half of the 2024/25 season under Regis Le Bris, who has transformed the Black Cats into genuine promotion contenders in the Championship. Sunderland currently sits in 4th place in the Championship table and will face Stoke City on Sunday.
Sunderland linked with five attackers including Aston Villa’s Louie Barry and Brighton’s Evan Ferguson
Brighton’s Evan Ferguson is perhaps the biggest name currently associated with Sunderland.
Sunderland are said to be interested in Ferguson, who has only played 12 Premier League games this season and scored once, with the majority of his appearances coming off the bench.
A potential loan deal appears to be doable, albeit quite unlikely. Ferguson is currently playing for Brighton, and it is unclear how plausible a loan transfer to the Championship would be. Furthermore, Sunderland has been told that Arsenal will be interested in Ferguson in the new year.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa’s Louie Barry has been recalled after a good loan spell at Stockport County in the first part of the season. He has numerous Championship teams on alert.
Sunderland has been connected with Barry, and a loan deal for the 21-year-old appears to be a possibility, however Villa appear to be taking their time deciding on Barry’s next best move.
Another deal that appears to be realistic for Sunderland is a prospective move for Celtic star Daniel Cummings.
Sunderland have been connected with Cummings following his remarkable scoring record in the UEFA Youth League with Celtic, where he has six goals in as many appearances this season.
He, too, has received interest from a number of clubs. However, Sunderland has been described as a ‘excellent fit’ for Cummings, who is only 18 years old and searching for first-team opportunities. He is also out of contract at Celtic at the end of the 2024/25 season.
Along with Ferguson, the Black Cats’ pursuit of Halmstads forward Yannick Agnero appears improbable.
Sunderland are reportedly keeping an eye on Agnero, who has four goals in 11 Allsvenskan games for Halmstads this season after joining the club in the summer.
On the surface, it sounds like a Sunderland transfer. However, at 21 years old, he is little older than the type of player Sunderland often targets in Europe.
And, given his lack of success this season at a club he only joined last summer, Sunderland’s decision to invest heavily on Agnero in January appears doubtful.
Finally, Sunderland are keeping an eye on Harvey Vale at Chelsea, and this transaction appears to have potential.
Vale is out of contract at Chelsea in the summer of 2025, therefore a January exit seems likely. Sunderland may have to consider a permanent move for the 21-year-old if Chelsea do not want to release him at the end of the season.
Vale impressed on loan at Bristol Rovers last season, as the central midfielder scored twice and assisted five times in 39 League One games.
Sunderland’s encounter at Stoke City on Sunday begins at 3 p.m.
