Sheffield Wednesday release statement on transfer embargo—update on player wages

Sheffield Wednesday issued a statement after the EFL announced that they had been placed under a transfer
embargo. The embargo was imposed after the team failed to meet an HMRC payment deadline on time, one year
after their last embargo episode due to a similar violation. The statement was made public on the EFL reporting
service website on Thursday evening, and a Sheffield Wednesday spokesperson said: “Sheffield Wednesday can
confirm a current EFL embargo which we are seeking to resolve at the earliest possible opportunity. This is a
temporary issue and a consequence of significant and as yet unpaid sums of money owed to the chairman which in
turn has impacted on the club’s immediate cashflow. We expect this situation to be finalised imminently, at which
point the embargo will be lifted.”

According to The Star, the club is not in danger of facing any sanctions because the players and staff were paid on

schedule today. Since Wednesday is outside of a transfer window, news of an embargo is not a pressing concern.

Although teams can sign free agents outside of windows, Owls manager Danny Röhl told reporters this week he was

not interested in making such a move.

The announcement follows a year to the day after Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri expressed his concern that the

team would not be able to pay players and staff their October 2023 wages on time due to what he called “cashflow

issues” in an interview with The Star, and 12 months after their last embargo. In an astonishing request to “save their

club,” Chansiri asked the club’s supporters to raise £2 million in a matter of days during the same interview. The

embargo was lifted once all payments were made within a day.

Along with League One Reading, Wednesday was one of two clubs operating under an embargo as of Thursday night.

They were chastised for violating “Regulation 16.7.4 Submission of Annual Accounts.”
