Patrick Roberts Sends Inspirational Message to Eliezer Mayenda After Blackburn Rovers Miss

Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts has delivered a heartfelt message of support to his young teammate Eliezer Mayenda following a dramatic 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day. The game saw Sunderland surrender a late lead, and Mayenda missed a golden opportunity to secure all three points in stoppage time.

The 19-year-old striker, who has been showing promise this season, found himself one-on-one with Blackburn goalkeeper Aynsley Pears after breaking free from his own half. However, a moment’s hesitation allowed Pears to smother the ball, leaving Mayenda visibly dejected at full-time.

Roberts, one of Sunderland’s most experienced players, was quick to rally around the young forward. Speaking after the game, Roberts emphasized the need for resilience in football, particularly for young players learning the game.

“He’s a great kid with so much talent,” Roberts said. “Of course, he’s upset, but that’s a good thing – it shows he cares. Everyone misses chances; it’s part of football. I missed a penalty a few weeks ago, and I’ve missed plenty of chances in my career. The key is to keep your head up and be ready for the next opportunity. He’ll learn from this and come back stronger.”

Roberts also highlighted the collective responsibility of the team to support Mayenda, adding:

“We all see the potential in him. He’s got the pace, the skill, and the attitude. It’s our job as a team to encourage him and make sure he knows that one moment doesn’t define him. He’ll score many important goals for this club in the future.”

Mayenda, who has already contributed with two goals and three assists this season, is seen as one of Sunderland’s rising stars. Despite the missed chance, head coach Tony Mowbray echoed Roberts’ sentiments, praising the young forward’s work ethic and potential.

“It’s all part of the learning curve,” Mowbray said. “Eliezer is still developing, and moments like this are where players grow. We trust him, and the team is behind him.”

Sunderland’s draw keeps them in contention for promotion, but the focus now shifts to their next fixtures as they aim to capitalize on their strong performances. With experienced players like Roberts providing leadership and support, the Black Cats are fostering an environment where young talents like Mayenda can thrive.

For Mayenda, the Blackburn miss may be a temporary setback, but with the backing of his teammates and the coaching staff, it’s clear that his best days are still ahead.
