Nick Saban says Ohio State fans have ‘psychotic obsession’ with Michigan

Nick Saban may have just become Columbus, Ohio’s most despised public figure.

During his interview on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Friday, the renowned coach spoke candidly about Ohio State fans and their bond with Michigan.

Saban criticised fans for focussing on Ryan Day and the team’s inadequacies in their disappointing defeat to Michigan in the regular season finale rather than looking ahead.

“You know, we’ve gotten on their fans a little bit. But what about these Ohio State fans? “They have a psychotic obsession with Michigan, and they should go to therapy or something to try to fix it,” Saban added.

“They have a chance to win the national championship, and here you are, you know, and nobody’s enthusiastic about their opportunity to play because, you know, they lost to Michigan, which was a tough game, and they lost the game, most likely, because of some of the mistakes they made. Those are correctable issues.”

In his opening remarks, Saban referred to the Buckeyes as the best team still in the college football playoffs, but he questioned if they could consistently deliver their best game.

“They’re going to have a really good chance to have a chance to win a championship if they play like they played against Tennessee,” Saban stated.

To be fair, since Ohio State’s thumping of the Volunteers at Ohio Stadium on December 21 and Michigan’s elimination from the playoffs, the sky is falling rhetoric has been considerably muted.

Nevertheless, Day and Ohio State are under tremendous pressure going into their Rose Bowl quarterfinal matchup with No. 1 Oregon, largely due to their late November loss to the Wolverines.

Since September, title or bust has also been the catchphrase, particularly in light of multiple rumors that the Buckeyes are assembling a $20 million roster with only one objective in mind.

Ohio State lost in Eugene, 32-31, on Oct. 12.

Day is 67-10 overall with two Big Ten championships, but Ohio State is seeking its first national championship since 2014.
