As Rangers were brought back down to earth with an almighty bump away to St Mirren on Boxing Day – losing a Scottish Premiership fixture for the first time to Aberdeen – Kris Boyd was hardly taken by surprise.
The Ibrox icon never let those big wins over Kilmarnock and Ross County get to his head.
Boyd believed that the ultimate test of Rangers’ improvement under Philippe Clement would be how they performed away from home. As a result, the sight of Rangers conceding a 93rd-minute winner away at St Mirren was all Boyd needed to conclude that a team 12 points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic had not, contrary to popular belief, turned a corner.
Clement admitted to being’so unhappy’ with Rangers’ performance in Paisley. Throughout the first half, his squad lost numerous individual duels, failing to deal with Stephen Robinson’s team’s pent-up energy.
Rangers have now lost 50% of their Premier League away games this season, with a negative goal difference to boot.
Kris Boyd hammers Rangers’ away record after St Mirren loss
“[Clement] is under pressure, there is no doubt about it,” Boyd tells me. Rangers’ away form has been a disgrace, to be honest. We’ve scored 10 out of a possible twenty-four. We’ve scored seven goals and surrendered eight.
“It is not good enough. You point out that Rangers have lost at Pittodrie, Celtic Park, Rugby Park, and St Mirren, but you’ve lost four of your last eight away games, and it’s not even the New Year!
“Its not good enough.”
Boyd was particularly concerned when summer acquisitions Connor Barron and Nedim Bajrami were substituted at halftime for Nico Raskin and Danilo. Two players that were already at Rangers when Clement succeeded Mick Beale in October 2023.
