After just 19 games, Stoke City fired head coach and former Norwich City first team coach Narcis Pelach.
Catalan Pelach, who was appointed in September at the age of 36 after leaving Johannes Hoff Thorup’s backroom staff, managed to win only three of the 18 Championship games he oversaw.
Pelach left after his team lost to Leeds 2-0 at home on Boxing Day, dropping them to 19th place in the standings and three points above the relegation zone.
“Narcis is a talented coach with huge potential; he works tirelessly and I have no doubt that he will go on to achieve success in the future,” Sporting director Jon Walters stated on the team’s official website. We must, however, acknowledge in retrospect that he has not been the best fit for this club at this time given the recent performances and results. “I accept full responsibility for that, and I’m absolutely determined that we will now make the right choice to take us forward,” the statement reads.
Our passion for Stoke City and unwavering commitment to helping the team succeed inform every choice we make.
Both goalie coach Paul Clements and analyst Harrison Glew, who followed Pelach from Norfolk, were not mentioned in Stoke’s official statement on Friday night.
Pelach drew 1-1 with Norwich in the Potteries back in October, although he only won three of his games as manager.
In the summer of 2023, the Spaniard was brought to City by David Wagner from Huddersfield Town.
Under Wagner, Pelach was primarily responsible for opposition analysis and worked closely with City’s defensive setup until taking over as first team coach upon Thorup’s arrival from Denmark.
The coaching staff for Stoke’s league matchup against high-flying Sunderland on Sunday has not yet been announced. Stoke has lost five of their last six league games and drawn the other.
