The Canaries controlled the first half and took the lead after Schwartau crossed the ball and Emi Marcondes
scored a straightforward close-range goal within five minutes.
After Danish striker Schwartau stroked the ball home for his first Norwich goal, Milwall, who are now managerless
and in 13th place, one point and one place behind their hosts, failed to muster a chance on goal before halftime
and fell behind 2-0.
The hosts dominated possession and came very near to increasing their lead in the second half, particularly when a
Schwartau effort bounced off the post.
Norwich rightly hung on, but Millwall’s first goal on goal, a beautiful low strike from Romain Esse from the edge of
the area, guaranteed a nerve-wracking end.
After a lopsided first period, the tense last few minutes didn’t seem likely.
After Marcondes’s tenacious first goal—his third in eight games—settled Norwich, their relentless pressure paid off
five minutes before halftime, when further vacillating defending gave Schwartau the opportunity to increase the
lead.
Millwall seldom threatened and could have been farther behind when Esse scored his fifth league goal of the
season. Millwall’s sole victory in the last eight games came on Saturday when they defeated Blackburn Rovers
under temporary management David Livermore.
Borja Sainz had gone close for Norwich and Schwartau went even closer, the teenager hitting the post with a right-
footed shot.
The missed opportunities did not matter, however, although an excellent Duncan Watmore run could have led to a
late leveller only for the striker to shoot shot straight at keeper Angus Gunn.
Norwich head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup:
I was thrilled with the first half, but regrettably it doesn’t take much to take away our rhythm and flow, and when
they scored it changed the game a little. “We have had a tough run, but the players were really on it straightaway.”
“We scored early, created chances, and just as importantly, we were really solid at the back, never giving them any
chances themselves.” “Our defensive base needs to be more solid, we have seen that in recent games, and it was
much better.”
“But we continued to defend well and I was also impressed with the way the players fought to get the result.”
Millwall interim head coach David Livermore:
In the meantime, Livermore confirmed he will be in charge once more when the Lions travel to play Coventry City
this weekend. “There are things going on behind the scenes and progress is being made, but I will take the game on
Sunday,” he said. “I thought Norwich had the edge but once we scored we could have got back in it and the lads are
disappointed we didn’t take anything from the game.” “Their two goals were not like us. We would normally
defend the last bits better than that.” Additionally, Livermore acknowledged that he is partially to blame because
he asked the players to press a little bit higher.
