Nolan ‘learned a lot’ about his players during defeat at Reading

Kevin Nolan is certain that he can “clear a lot of things up quite quickly” after Cobblers’ sixth straight loss. The Town
manager watched his new team give up a goal within five minutes at Reading before losing to a simple long ball as
the home team gradually took a two-goal lead after thirty minutes. Two more goals, either side of Tom Eaves’
consolation, cemented Northampton’s fate in the second half. “I learnt a lot about my players today and I said to
them afterwards – we can’t feel sorry for ourselves,” Nolan said.

“I told them that they are good players and they are all here for a reason and that’s what I want them to show. They

need to take a bit of responsibility and start putting that onto the pitch. The more time I get on the training ground

and the more time we get in the video room analysing, I feel that will all come.”

Cobblers have given up 15 goals in their previous four games, but Nolan needs to find a way to turn things around

before three crucial games in the next week, beginning on Sunday against Shrewsbury, who are now in second place.

“We have discussed our guiding principles and our future self,” Nolan continued. We’ve made an effort to fill them

with as much information as possible, but I think we’ll get the most out of them gradually, training session by

training session.

Because we all operate differently, the club’s daily operations will most likely alter greatly from those of the previous

manager. I need to learn more about them, and they need to learn more about me.

However, I have to say that throughout the past 72 hours, I have been quite impressed with the personnel and the

boys’ efforts to assimilate the knowledge. It was a huge shock to give up so quickly.

“We recovered a bit but not as much as I would have liked and I was disappointed with the goals we conceded but I

think we can clear a lot of things up quite quickly.”
