1925 FA Cup final
The 1925 FA Cup final took place on April 25, 1925, at Wembley Stadium in London, England, between Sheffield
United and Cardiff City. The final was the highlight of English football’s major cup tournament, the Football
Association Challenge Cup (FA Cup), sponsored by the Football Association. Sheffield United won the game by a solitary goal.
Both teams joined the competition in the first round and advanced through five stages before reaching the final.
Sheffield United conceded only two goals on their way to the final, both of which came in a 3-2 win against local
rivals The Wednesday in round two. Cardiff also conceded twice before the final, once in the fourth round and again
in the semi-final. They struggled to beat Darlington of Third Division North in the first round, requiring two replays
to advance. This was the second time a team from outside England has made it to the FA Cup final. The first, Scottish
side Queens Park, competed in the 1885 final. It also marked the first time a Welsh team had reached the
competition’s final.
The final drew around 92,000 people. After 30 minutes, Sheffield United’s Fred Tunstall dispossessed Harry Wake
on the edge of the Cardiff penalty area and shot past custodian Tom Farquharson to score the game’s only goal.
Cardiff were unable to respond, and the game ended 1-0, earning Sheffield United their fourth FA Cup win. The match was the last time Sheffield United won the competition. Cardiff returned to Wembley two years later, in the
1927 final, and won the trophy for the first time.
