Ange Postecoglou has attracted a barrage of criticism for not changing his tactics despite a spate of injuries

Tottenham Hotspur have not enjoyed the 2024/25 season as they would have liked to, with Ange Postecoglou royally struggling to achieve consistency at White Hart Lane.

Spurs are currently 11th in the Premier League table – they have lost more games than they have won in the league this term. Their form continues to blow hot and cold, having been hammered 6-3 by Liverpool last time out after beating Southampton and Manchester United.

Ange Postecoglou and Co. will be desperate to bounce back to winning ways when they make the trip to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day. The defeat at the hands of Liverpool saw the Australian tactician receive a lot of criticism from certain sections of the fanbase, pundits and media outlets.

It was a chaotic affair in North London with a depleted Spurs side trying to punch a high-flying Liverpool but instead getting counter-punched and knocked out. Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel slated his ‘crazy’ tactics after the game at the weekend. Former Spurs striker Darren Bent also slammed Postecoglou for not having a ‘Plan B’.

Ahead of Spurs’ game at Nottingham Forest on Thursday, Big Ange has now revealed that the defeat to Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ‘weighed’ on him heavily.

“I am responsible for it. I am the one that’s kind of choosing the path we’re on,” Big Ange told Football London.

“It’s difficult. I don’t like seeing our supporters having to experience a game like that. I don’t like the players giving everything and feeling the way they do. And all the staff, because everyone works hard and they’re all doing a great job.

“But ultimately, a day like the weekend, everyone kind of leaves fairly deflated and disappointed and unfairly judged in my opinion. That’s my responsibility. Of course, it weighs on me very heavily. But as I keep saying, my biggest responsibility is to try and change the course of this club and bring success to it. And as much as I take it pretty hard, I still feel like my role is to make sure that we stay the course.”

The defeat to Arne Slot’s Reds has intensified scrutiny of Big Ange’s managerial position. Tottenham’s struggles have multiplied as the season has progressed as they head into the Christmas period sitting 11th in the league after yet another disheartening result.

The 59-year-old has shown a reluctance to make adjustments and be a bit more pragmatic, much to the disliking of certain sections of the fanbase. Big Ange looks like a man who will live and die by his principles, and there’s certainly an argument to suggest he has been awfully unfortunate when it comes to injuries this season.

The alarming levels of inconsistent displays and results will undoubtedly be a concern for Tottenham fans, and the game against Liverpool after wins over Southampton and Man United further underlined that. Let’s hope Big Ange’s White army bounces back against Forest at City Ground.
