Norwich City column: Edward Seaman calls for patience in long-term project amid testing run of results

It’s getting harder to deny that Norwich City and Johannes Hoff Thorup have been going through a difficult time.

A streak of two victories in 13 Championship games—or 11 points out of a possible 39—speaks for itself.

We will still have a record of concentrating on the wrong end of the table compared to where we would like and hope

to be, even if we defeat Millwall at Carrow Road on Boxing Day (3pm).

Norwich City columnist Edward Seaman

This week’s editorial is a fresh appeal for patience and faith in the long-term enterprise at hand, but it would be

foolish of me to expect anyone to be pleased with the recent outcomes.

If we’re being totally honest, this campaign had the term “transition” written all over it before a ball was even kicked.

Perhaps a number of decisive early-season victories set the bar too high.

It seems unlikely that a young hiring policy, the sale of major individuals, and a fresh attitude can lead to immediate success.

It’s also not a good idea to have a core group of aged players who are waiting for their contracts to expire and are aware that they are not part of the team’s long-term future.

Cleaning up the mess and assembling a team that could compete for promotion would always need at least three

transfer windows.

But that’s not to dismiss this season. With a gentler run of games over the holiday season, it is crucial that our form

begins to improve. In football, momentum is crucial, and as we all know, wins inspire confidence.

However, those displays against Plymouth, Watford, and Hull ought to serve as a reminder that this project has a lot

of promise.

We can compete with the greatest clubs in this league, as seen by our first-half performance against Sunderland and

our successful games against Leeds and Sheffield United.

Even though it can seem like it sometimes, I don’t think the good old days are that far off.

To all readers, especially those who are travelling with me, I hope you have a happy Christmas.
