“I can’t believe it”: Pundit responds to Angus Gunn dilemma as Norwich City eye 27-year-old.
Carlton Palmer has expressed his amazement that Norwich City had not reached an agreement with Angus Gunn ahead of the January transfer window, despite the goalkeeper’s contract expiring in the summer.
The 28-year-old has been with the Canaries since the summer of 2021, and he has made over 150 appearances for the club, helping them reach the play-offs last season.
This season has not been particularly successful for the Scotland international, who has only kept three clean sheets in 16 outings and may feel that he might have done more to increase that total.
With a contract stalemate between Norwich and Gunn, Gunn may depart Carrow Road as early as January, with Norwegian shot-stopper Egil Selvik attracting interest from Johannes Hoff Thorup.
Palmer makes Gunn, Norwich claim amid contract situation
Throup’s influence on the Norwich team is evident, as evidenced by their interest in Selvik, a player who has been with the club for several years.
This upgrade appears to be the reason Gunn has not yet been awarded a new contract, and he will look for work elsewhere.
However, according to player-turned-pundit Palmer, the Canaries are making a mistake, and the 28-year-old’s contract problem must be resolved fast.
In an exclusive interview with Football League World, he revealed that Norwich City are hunting for alternatives for Angus Gunn. It is well documented that negotiations with Gunn are underway, although he has yet to sign a new deal. So the likelihood that they will lose him in the January transfer window or at the end of the season is growing.
“I would have thought that if he doesn’t sign a new contract, they’d try to sell him during the January transfer window.” If not, he will leave for free at the end of the season. So Norwich City are already considering their alternatives, and they are keen in bringing Norwegian goalkeeper Egil Selvik to Carrow Road.
“His contract with Norwegian club FK Haugesund expires at the end of this season. He has spent the last four seasons there, and it appears that he will not sign a new deal and will be on the move. So, Norwich will attempt to sign him during the January transfer window.”
Palmer described the 27-year-old goalie as “very experienced and capable,” citing his four Norwegian caps. Norwich appears to be Selvik’s likely destination, and it improves Johannes Hoff Thorup’s relationship with his goalie.
I can’t believe this. Gunn has been fantastic for them, he has been regular and steady, but if these contracts are not resolved soon, this is likely to happen. Players run down their contracts, and it will be tough to reach an agreement with them since other clubs will be negotiating with their agents, and he is available for free.
“In January, they’ll be in the workplace. If he does not sign a new deal, it is likely that Norwich will sell him during the January transfer window.
“I’d be very surprised that Gunn is still at the football club come January if they bring a goalkeeper in.”
Gunn has been good for Norwich but the Canaries can improve on him
Norwich have struggled with consistency this season, and if they have a strong run of form, they follow it up with another dismal one.
The Canaries need to improve their defensive performance, and bringing in a new goalkeeper with more control over his backline will help them do so.
Their defensive woes will cost them a play-off spot if they do not improve, and Gunn may be forced to make way in the coming weeks as Thorup attempts to make the changes required to propel his team up the table.

Selvik is a year younger than Gunn, and with the possibility of bringing him in for free, it will not come at a great cost for the club financially, and he could inspire Norwich’s push towards the top six in 2025.
