Sunderland’s strong form in the 2024-25 season continued on Saturday, when they rallied from behind to defeat Norwich City 2-1.
Daniel Ballard scored the equaliser in the match, and despite suffering a knock late in the game, the centre-back performed admirably.
Unfortunately, fitness issues have been a recurring issue for Ballard, with injuries marring his time at the Stadium of Light.
While the Arsenal academy graduate appeared in 44 games last season, he has failed to get consistent playing time this season, repeating his difficulties from his first year with the club in 2022-23.
However, this has not deterred interest from the tier above, with a slew of clubs vying for his services, according to TBR.
According to these reports, Aston Villa, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Newcastle United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers are all interested in the defender, who has 28 caps for Northern Ireland.
Carlton Palmer raises Dan Ballard transfer concern
Carlton Palmer spoke exclusively to FLW about the alleged interest in Ballard, and he feels the Black Cats will do whatever it takes to keep the defender.
“The Northern Irish international is having an outstanding season and can play as a central defender.”
“He has proven himself in the Championship and, without a doubt, has the potential to thrive in the Premier League,” Palmer told Football League World.
“When so many clubs are interested in the player, your head does turn slightly. He is only 25 years old and may be a valuable addition to any of those football clubs.
“Of course, you’ll want to play in the Premier League, and after paying £2 million for him, they’ve raised his asking price to £20 million.
“There’s always discussion about the noisy neighbours, Newcastle United, but I don’t see Sunderland letting him go there.
“Clubs are going to look at all of their top players. We understand Sunderland’s strategy of bringing in players like Dan Ballard for little money and then wanting to sell them for £20 million.
“I can’t see Sunderland letting any of their players leave while they’re still in contention for automatic promotion, unless someone comes in and spends a fortune to get them.
“It will be worrying times for their manager going into the transfer window, with so many players coveted by Premier League clubs.”
Sunderland need to retain Dan Ballard’s services beyond the January transfer window
While the number of parties interested in Ballard is cause for concern, a deal that runs until 2028 will alleviate some of the stress.
This means they won’t have to sell the 25-year-old in January, and a streak of strong performances leading into the summer will further improve his value.
Furthermore, he could be critical to their promotion chances because he can pose a significant threat from set pieces while also providing a solid defensive presence.
Sunderland should therefore cling to whatever price they have on the Northern Irishman, since losing their number five mid-season might be crucial in determining the top two.
