“It’s incredible” – Middlesbrough FC urged to wrap up Ipswich Town agreement

“Just makes sense” – Middlesbrough FC urged to wrap up Ipswich Town agreement.

Middlesbrough are considering permanently signing on-loan defender George Edmundson, Football League World understands.

While not initially selected as Michael Carrick’s first choice centre-back, injury has forced the Mancunian to appear in 18 Championship games for the North Yorkshire club.

George Edmundson – Career history
Tenure Team
2015–2019 Oldham Athletic
2015 Ramsbottom United (loan)
2016 Alfreton Town (loan)
2017–2018 AFC Fylde (loan)
2019–2021 Rangers
2021 Derby County (loan)
2021– Ipswich Town
2024– Middlesbrough (loan)

Edmundson joined current parent club Ipswich in 2021 on a four-year agreement from Glasgow Rangers. His contract at Portman Road expires in the summer, and he has already been excluded from Kieran McKenna’s Premier League plans, so he is set to go.

In excellent form and evidently repaying his temporary supporters’ enthusiasm on Teesside, it may only be a matter of time until his move becomes permanent.

‘His time at Ipswich is up’ says pundit

We asked FLW Boro fan commentator Jasper Hudson if the club should permanently sign Edmundson in January, and if so, what sum would be reasonable.

“Making Edmundson’s agreement permanent is simply one that makes sense.” I believe he’s earned it. He has been steady and deserves a contract. It would be useful for us.

“We have depth at centre-back, but Dael Fry has just returned from a long-term injury, and Lenihan is still out with it. Matt Clarke and Rav van den Berg have both experienced previous injuries, so having depth is beneficial, especially this season.

“Going forward, he’s a competent Championship centre-back, so I’d be happy to make that permanent for a small fee.
