Eustace reiterates Blackburn target with transfer reminder

John Eustace reiterated Blackburn Rovers need help in the January transfer window and insists the season aim is to continue their improvement.

The Rovers head coach is hopeful he will get a couple of ‘quality’ additions to bolster his overperforming squad in the New Year market. CEO Steve Waggott has confirmed the plan is to improve Eustace’s options next month.

The squad has performed remarkably well and does not need much. But a centre-forward is an obvious hole that needs to be filled if they’re to really surprise many and finish in the top-six.

A left-winger is another long-term area that Eustace has wanted to bolster too. He reaffirmed that need when quizzed on Rovers’ season aspirations.

“No, the goal is to do better than last season, to build and grow,” he answered when asked if promotion was the target by a non-local reporter.

“I am here to do that and make us competitive week in, week out and a force in the Championship. The main goal is to do that, we’re 10 months in now.

“Last season was a difficult season and you can see where we have improved and how we are expanding on and off the pitch. The ambition is to be better than last year.

“The aim is to improve with half the season to go. We want to bring players in during January to improve the squad. That’s the goal to do that and improve week by week.

“We don’t need loads, a few quality players to help the current group.”

Illness has been an issue for Rovers with a few players struggling in the camp. Callum Brittain returned to the squad after two games out whilst Tyrhys Dolan has also suffered in the last week.

That was the reason Owen Beck did not start at Millwall too whilst Harry Leonard travelled but wasn’t named on the bench.

“Owen was poorly for the last three days and did very light training yesterday. We knew we couldn’t get 90 minutes out of him,” Eustace explained.

“Toddy going on the left was a bit different. We came here to win but disappointed we didn’t get anything. Harry Leonard was just selection.”
