Southampton appoint failed Roma boss Ivan Juric as new manager after Russell Martin sack

Ivan Juric has been hired by Southampton as their next manager for a period of 18 months.

The 49-year-old takes over for Russell Martin, who was fired after the Saints lost to Tottenham 5-0 last weekend, leaving them in last position in the Premier League.

Prior to his unlucky tenure in the Italian capital, Juric made an impression as manager of Hellas Verona and Torino before being fired by Roma in November after just 12 games in charge.

“I’m overjoyed. It’s a huge challenge, in my opinion, but I have a lot of hope since I saw a team that can perform better,” Juric stated.

“It’s critical to establish an instant connection with the supporters. I believe Southampton supporters will like an aggressive squad, which is what I desire.

This is Juric’s first management position outside of Italy, and he has signed an 18-month contract with Southampton that reportedly includes a summer break clause.

According to reports, when Nathan Jones was appointed in November 2022 to succeed Ralph Hasenhuttl, Juric was one of two candidates in the running.

After the crushing loss to Spurs, the club reportedly wanted to hire a manager “who can bring solidity and discipline to the squad.” However, it is believed that Uric won’t be leading the team against Fulham on Sunday, and his first game in the dugout is probably going to be the Boxing Day match against West Ham.
