Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough striker faith as rotation policy continues

Tommy Conway and Emmanuel Latte Lath continue to share the load at the top of the pitch for Boro

Michael Carrick continues to back both of his Middlesbrough strikers and insists the rotation policy will benefit rather than hinder Tommy Conway and Emmanuel Latte Lath.

Conway was the man given the nod in the draw at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday after Latte Lath started the last two and scored the decisive goal in the victory over Millwall. It carried on a trend starting in October when Conway first started as a centre-forward for Boro, with neither striker starting more than two consecutive games up top.

The policy appears to be working, with both Boro men scoring plenty of goals. Latte Lath’s late equaliser for Boro in the 3-3 draw at Plymouth was his ninth of the season, putting him back ahead of Conway on eight. Latte Lath coming out of the side came in the same week his agent discussed the possibility of a January exit from Boro, but having addressed the issue pre-match, Carrick insisted it had nothing to do with his selection decision in Devon.

Instead, he explained: “It’s just like all season really. We feel certain games will suit certain players better. We got a little bit of joy from it today, but hoped to get a little more at times. They’re the choices we make and the decisions we’ve got every game because of the strength of the squad.

“It’s nice to have those decisions to make. All season all the lads have chipped in at different times and I’ve no concerns that will continue to be the case. There’s a healthy mentality throughout the squad to those selection decisions. They’re pushing each other all the time and raising the standards.

“But I keep saying, we’re not competing against each other, we’re competing against the other teams in the league. Within the squad, the lads train hard and push standards up and in terms of end product and goals, we’re doing pretty well.”
