McKenna: We Have to Take Lessons From Game That Ran Away From Us

The Magpies took the lead in the first twenty-five seconds thanks to a goal from Alexander Isak, who later scored his maiden hat-trick for the North-East team. Town, who are still in 18th place in the Premier League and have yet to win at home this season, never looked like they were going to win.

When asked what Town should learn from the defeat, McKenna responded, “We definitely need to learn some lessons from it.” We haven’t had many situations like that; throughout the season, we have been fiercely competitive, and I’ve been saying that the team has been performing admirably to be as competitive as we have been.

“To be competitive in games and accomplish all the correct things, we need to be nearly 100%, and we weren’t able to do that today. The game eluded us because we faced a formidable opponent who was superior to us today.

“There are definitely things we can take from it, things we need to improve on, and things we’ve done incredibly well this season that we weren’t able to demonstrate today, especially in the first half.

“It’s obvious that we’re going to have to play a different side of ourselves in the next couple of games given the games we have coming up.”

As he continued to reflect on the lessons his team needs to learn, he added: “I think the first goal, of course, is disappointing, but we’ve made a couple of mistakes in the goal and it can happen if you’re a team that starts on the front foot against a very, very good team.” In his opinion, the 20 minutes leading up to halftime were particularly important because, following the goal, we were in the game, we were OK, we had plenty of opportunities on the ball, we got to good areas, we had some big chances, and the game was fairly open.

However, I believe the game began to slip away from us in the middle of the first half, and they were starting to pose a serious threat. We’ve excelled this season at game management, decision-making, defensive organization, and defensive resilience, and we’ve relied on these during trying times.
