Connor O’Neill has chastised Chelsea fans for their “shameful behaviour” after hearing poverty chanting during their match against Everton at Goodison Park.
The Liverpool Echo reported that the away section sang “feed the Scousers” to the tune of Band Aid’s “Do they know it’s Christmas?” throughout the first half of the game.
On the Liverpool ECHO website (22 December, 14:03), journalist O’Neill criticised people who were singing the talk.
“With less than a minute on the clock, Chelsea fans are already chanting ‘feed the Scousers’. The juxtaposition is not just stupid and brainless, but also repulsive. “Shameful conduct,” he wrote.
Chelsea fans humiliate themselves against Everton.
This type of action is completely repulsive and requires a firm reprimand.
At a time when people are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis and the use of food banks is on the rise, supporters should work together to address these issues, rather than using it as a cheap shot to score points in a football match.
Words like “shameful” and “vile” barely do credit to how mind-numbingly dreadful these kind of shouts are, especially in an environment where many followers of both clubs will be struggling with growing costs and bills.
Here’s a clever idea, right? Why don’t we all try to show some empathy to our fellow humans, especially those who are struggling during what may already be a difficult season for many. In other words, everyone should do so much better than this.
