Sunderland AFC: Reading FC should target Joe Anderson move

Reading have already been connected with a Sunderland player this season, with Jewison Bennette reportedly interested in a transfer to the Select Car Leasing Stadium in the summer.

Bennette, 20, has battled for playing time throughout his tenure at the Stadium of Light. At the time of writing, he has made only one senior appearance this season, which came in the EFL Cup.

Regis Le Bris is expected to be active in the transfer market next month, thus the Black Cats may try to move the Costa Rican during the next window to create room for new players.

Berkshire might still be an attractive option for the winger when the January transfer market opens.

Chem Campbell, a loanee from Wolves, may not stay with the Royals beyond the January window, despite his impressive performance in the first half of the season.

Furthermore, the Royals lack veteran alternatives out wide, with Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan now injured.

This makes the wing area one they should want to bolster, and it will be fascinating to see whether the League One side can sign anyone in January, since the club is still not sold at this point.

Reading FC has additional areas to address during the January transfer window.

Given the Royals’ current condition, the most they can hope for is four or five loan agreements, with the parent clubs covering at least a significant portion of their salaries.

And there are lots of areas that need to be strengthened when the January transfer market opens, if they can sign any new first-team players.

They can probably manage without a goalkeeper, but they do need a left-back, a centre-back, and maybe a right-back, depending on the fitness of Kelvin Abrefa and Andy Yiadom.

As previously said, both the wing and striker departments require attention.

That’s not even taking into account prospective exits, so the Royals have plenty of options in the transfer market if they can complete a takeover or reach an arrangement with the EFL to bring in some new players.

Joe Anderson should be on Reading FC’s radar

Joe Anderson, like Bennette, has seen little playing time during the 2024/25 season.

He has only made one senior appearance this season, and with that in mind, Le Bris will almost certainly allow him to depart in some form when the transfer market opens next month.

Anderson played last season on loan at Shrewsbury Town, and despite his limited playing time, he garnered some positive feedback from some of the Shropshire club’s supporters on social media.

He may perhaps be a solid choice for a club playing out of the back, and judging by his first few games in charge, Noel Hunt seems open to playing this approach.

The 23-year-old’s versatility allows him to play in both central defense and left-back, which is something the Royals need to solve during the forthcoming window.

Jeriel Dorsett has been out for much of the season, and while Andre Garcia can play left-back, he is inexperienced and has to improve his defensive game.

Dorsett’s setback underlines the need for more depth on the left side.

The centre-back position must also be examined due to a lack of depth there. Louie Holzman may be able to step in, but improved quality in this area might have a significant impact on where they finish the season.

Given the uncertainty surrounding Tyler Bindon’s future, it’s crucial to investigate this matter.

Anderson is not guaranteed to start every game, but if he performs well in practice, he will be engaged on a regular basis and be a part of a team overcoming adversity in the midst of serious off-field difficulties.

The defender understands that if this prospective loan move does not work out, he will be free to return to the Stadium of Light at the conclusion of the season, making this a low-risk loan transfer for all sides if the Royals can complete the deal.
