Middlesbrough is allegedly looking to sign a defender on a permanent basis in the upcoming January transfer window.
Middlesbrough transfer news
Middlesbrough, now sixth in the Championship based on goal difference, may use the January transfer window to secure a playoff position and surpass rivals Watford and West Bromwich Albion. Their uneven form suggests that they are far from finished, with two wins in their previous five games, including a 1-0 success against Millwall last time out.
With three games remaining in a congested December schedule, Boro will want to start the new year in style and in the playoffs. Meanwhile, if they can push and earn the opportunity to play at Wembley Stadium before maybe clinching promotion to the Premier League in May, one piece of January business will have been well worth it.
Middlesbrough are looking to recruit George Edmundson permanently after a successful loan from Ipswich Town. Earning the minutes he craved, the defender might even make a permanent move at a reasonable price, with his current contract at Portman Road set to expire at the end of the season, allowing for a low-cost transfer.
Middlesbrough’s centre defence has started 17 of their 21 Championship games this season and is gradually becoming a key player under Carrick. Securing his services on a permanent basis, especially if Boro end up in the Premier League next season, should be one of their top goals.
“Great” Edmundson is key to promotion chances
Middlesbrough’s move to sign Edmundson on loan proved to be a stroke of genius in transfer strategy. The Ipswich Town loanee knows all about getting promoted to the Premier League, having been a member of Kieran McKenna’s winning squad last season. He can now achieve back-to-back promotions with different teams by playing a far more significant part under Carrick and Boro.
The former Manchester United midfielder has praised Edmundson since his arrival in Teesside, saying via The Northern Echo after Middlesbrough completed a loan agreement for the centre-back, “George, meanwhile, arrives with great experience.” We like to have people in the dressing room who have had the experience and understand what it’s like [to win promotion].
“He clearly did it last season. With Dael and Darragh absent for a short length of time, we felt it was necessary to balance things out.
The timing of Middlesbrough’s offer is unknown, but a permanent move for Edmundson makes sense considering the starting berth he has enjoyed since joining on loan from Ipswich in the summer transfer window.
