The criticized VAR officials who denied Rangers a penalty in the Premier Premier Sports Cup Final have been defended by Brendan Rodgers, who has reminded the spot kick snipers that they are not “machines.”
This week, SFA referee Willie Collum was forced to acknowledge that the Light Blues should have been given a stoppage time pen in last Sunday’s thrilling 3-3 Hampden match. Liam Scales grabbed Vaclav Cerny as he was making his way into the penalty box and hauled him down on the line of the box.
Collum was retaliated against by the Ibrox club, which said the error had “damaged the credibility of Scottish football.” However, Rodgers has made an effort to give the Clydesdale House staff a chance, echoing SFA CEO Ian Maxwell’s warning that VAR will “never” be flawless: “I’ve been involved in 20 Celtic Rangers games now and I always feel there’s a narrative sort after the game, in each game,” Rodgers stated.
“Would a penalty have been appropriate? Would a red card have been appropriate? Had they not? Was there supposed to be a purpose? even offside penalties that are given out! I can therefore see why you might choose to look at it because there is always something in the story. It was most likely given for the first foul, which was obviously not on the line, based on my evaluation of the pictures I’ve seen. Naturally, though, it then progresses to the penalty element.In the end, though, you must go on regardless of what occurs in the game. The only thing we can control is to continue and win the game.
“It’s always been acknowledged that even with VAR, there’s going to be human error,” Rodgers told Sky Sports when asked if there was a larger problem with the VAR process not performing as intended when an error is made. The men are not robots.Instead of being under pressure during the game, they are gazing in a more relaxed manner. Still, it comes down to interpretation. As a seasoned official, it is evident that one of the VAR officials believed the first foul occurred outside of the scene as the situation unfolded.
